Teen Films - The Bling Ring

                                                            The Bing Ring

The Bling Ring film is based on a real event. It is a teen film about a group of teenagers who go out partying ,take drugs and are interested in fashion, they spot an opportunity when they find a house left open and go in to wonder which leads to them starting a life of crime involving robbing celebrity homes.

Conventions:

  • Relationships/Friendship
  • Money
  • Greed
  • Rebellion
  • Peer Pressure
The themes such a crime, fashion, rebellion drugs and alcohol are typical stereotypes of teenagers, the film portrays modern culture teens in a negative way hinting that modern teens are selfish, rebellious and think they are in control.

The clique are all the same, however they all play an individual part in the group such as the leader, the lookout and the boy who provides the gang with the addresses of celebrity homes. This links with other teen films as they usually have groups.also included in the group is a girl who keeps asking for advice on how she looks ,this suggests she is self obsessed with her appearance.

This film is different from other teen films because it doesn't involve much romance or a relationship between two teens. Most teen fils involve first love however this is not included in this film.

The protagonists is portrayed as a boy who is unsocial and not a part of the high school society however the gang leader comes along and makes him feel welcome and this leads to him being involved in criminal activity with her,he is peer pressured into it and is constantly worrying but he still goes ahead so he can impress the girl.

The Bling Ring

THE BLING RING FILM

  • The 'Bling Ring' film is a teen movie because the main character focus is on a clique of rebellious teenagers who are stealing valuable items/goods from celebrities living in Hollywood; fashion icons.
Conventions:

Themes

  • Crime
  • Partying (Clubbing)
  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Fashion
  • Relationships
  • Money
  • Rebellian
  • Greed
The way in which this film reflects about modern culture teenagers is a negative view, from stereotypical viewpoints teenagers are made out to be these or some sort of uncontrollable bad teens who are associated with drugs, alcohol and taking the route of the life of crime. However, not all teenagers are the same and this is only one representation of teenagers.

The clique are all the same, however they all have indiviaul roles within the group. The ringer leader, the bitch boy, the lookout, the self-obessed and a follower.  This links to other teen dramas because most of them are inviolved with gangs/ groupies etc or they are different to other people mentally or physically which makes them feel the need to act in a certain manner.

The internet has a major involvement in the movie and with teen generally, the protagonist provides the celebrities home addresses from the internet and also ensure that the celebrity is away before they target that home. Also they use 'Facebook' a major social website to post pictures of themselves partying and having fun like any other teen would do.

Settings/Locations

  • Celebrity homes'
  • High school
  • Nightclubs
  • Parents' homes
  • Bedrooms (wardrobes)

Music
  • Urban
  • Hip hop
  • Dance
  • Trance
  • FOR EXAMPLE:

(soundtrack)

Characters
  • Teenagers
  • Stupid Adults
  • Authorities ruining the teens fun
Costumes
  • urban
  • designer brands/ labels
  • fashionable
  • latest trends
This film differs from other films because it doesn't involve much relationships and romance where as most other teen movies do involve this aspect.

The protagonist (the boy) is influenced by the leader into doing criminal activity, he is venerable to the situation and knows what he is doing is wrong yet he still does it to impress her. He is a provider/ follower who does everything the leader says to keep her pleased, he is an social outcast of the students at high school therefore the leader takes advantage of his kindness and tries to act as if she is his best friend for him to do what she wants him to do. This particular character is similar in other teen movies such as mean girls where their innocence is taken by the bad influence of other around them.

3 trailers

Movies that i will be analyzing:

  • Anuvahood
  • Dear John
  • Shes the man

Anuvahood is a urban comedy movie enjoyed by many teenage boys and girls in the uk,one of the reasons why teenagers enjoy anuvahood is due to the fact that they can relate to the areas the film is set in aswell as relating to the things that happen in urban areas. The main character in the movie is Adam Decon who is known for comedy films.Adam Decon grew up in an urban area therefore teenages find is easy to relate to him.

Dear John is another example of a teen movie,it is about a soldier called John and a teenage girl called savant who meet in the beach and fall in love however John has to go back to work and the couple are forced to have a long distance relationship communicating with each other by sending letters.Due to the fact that the film contains love and romance scenes the films is targeted at a female audience .

Shes the man is an example of a teen film targeted at male teenagers,we can see this because the film is about two identical twins one who is a female and has a passion for football however she isn't allowed onto the college football team because she is a girl so when her brother is away on holiday she dresses as a boy and acts as her brother to play in the college football finals.

3 TRAILERS - that have different audiences

3 MOVIE TRAILERS THAT I WILL ANALYSE:

  1. MEAN GIRLS
  2. ATTACK THE BLOCK
  3. WHITE CHICKS
Mean girls is a prime example of a teen movie, this is because of the context and characters that are used to portray young people. The movie is appeals to females because it central character is what girls can relate too. The main character is Lindsey Lohan who plays a transfer from Africa and is caught up in all the girl drama. This storyline appeals to the teens and early 20s type of people because it is what some people do experience in their high school life.
Attack the Block is also an example of a teen movie, this is because it is about a young group of street boys. This film could be mainly aimed at the males, young boys who are in their teens. They can relate to the violence, language and friendship that is portrayed in the movie. It is an urban film who urban people can relate to the locations also.
White chicks fall under the category of teen movies under the subheading of crime/comedy. The storyline is about 2 disgraced FBI agents who go undercover as white female sisters in effort to protect hotel heiresses the Wilson sisters from a kidnapping plot. The audience this is aimed at is 16+, they get a thrill from all the drama that goes on within the movie.
