Dear Diary,
its 7.43am and I've been dressed since 6:00.  I wasn't able to sleep all night, I've been feeling nervous for the past week and the day has finally arrived. Monday 5th September 2014, my first day at college, my worst nightmare. I was bullied at school; so why would college be any different? In fact, this was bound to be my worst 2 years of my life. College is where innocent girls turn into sluts and boys which would do anything to get them into bed. You have "the nerds", "the asians", "The Blacks" "the drug addicts " and  "unsociables" .Oh yeah, the worst of all those groups would have to be "the populars", I'd do anything to avoid any sort of interaction with them. You had that handsome looking boy that all the girls would die for. (JAKIRS ROOM SCENE) And then that girl who everyone's scared of, always looking glamorous with her fancy designer handbags and shoes who would look for every possible way to make your life miserable. (THAHMINAS ROOM SCENE) (THEN BACK TO NADIAS ROOM) and then there's me, an outcast, a nobody who doesn't fit in with anybody. God knows how I'm going to make it through the next two years.

Genre and Convention

What is a Teen Film?
- A teen film is a genre which is targeted at an audience aged 13 - 19 where the plot is based on a teens stereotypical interests. These could include:
- Crime
- Gangs
- Romance/Sex/Relationships
- Rebellion
- Bad relationship with parents but very good relationship with friends
- Cliques
- Popularity

Teenagers is the stage between being an adult and a child and this is where the biggest changes happen to their lives physically and emotionally. Films usually use these changes to create certain characters in films to portray teenagers as a whole in society. For example, the innocence of a teenager would be taken away from the influences of a bad character/s. The film industry usually show a sense of weakness and vulnerability in teenagers which is highlighted through the plot of these films involving bad habits such as crime, alcohol and drugs. This portrays  a negative view and representation on teenagers which is unfair to those adolescents that do not associate themselves with criminal activity.

Who watches them?

Teen films are watched by teenagers themselves because they can relate to the film which makes it more pleasurable for them to watch. Also, teenagers might watch the teen films because they have certain stars they idolise and therefore watch the film to follow their footsteps.

What sub-genres are common in teen films?
- Romance
- Crime
- Comedy
- Musicals
- Thriller
- Sci-fi
- Rom com

What Locations Do We Usually Notice in Teen Films?
- Teen Bedrooms
- College
- High School
- Cafeteria/Lunch hall
- Common Room
- Parks
- Classrooms
- Friends houses
- Sports pitch/hall
- Geeky labs
- Detention
- House Parties
- Night clubs

What characters do we see in teen films?
- Popular Girls / Boys
- Nerds
- Cheerleaders
- Stupid Bimbos
- Bullied Kids
- Hot Boy/Girl
- New Girl/Boy
- The Outcast
-The class clown

Teen Films - The Bling Ring

The Bling Ring

The Bling Ring is a good example of a teen movie because it focuses on the stereotypical view on teenagers. It is about a group of rebellious teenagers who take drugs, are interested in fashion and steal from celebrities in Hollywood.

The Trailer

Themes:

- Friendships/ Relationships
- Crime
- Drugs and Alcohol
- Money
- Fashion
 - Partying

Settings and Locations:

- Celebrity homes
- Bedrooms
- Night Clubs

How 'The Bling Ring' reflects modern day teenagers
' The Bling Ring' represents teenagers in a negative way because they portray them as being irresponsible rebellious teenagers who go out to commit crimes and associate themselves with drugs and alcohol. This film gives their audience a negative overview of teenage life which is the stereotype of teens in modern day society.

The Characters
The characters in 'The Bling Ring' play different roles within the same group. The group has:
- The ringer leader
- The lookout
- The boy who provides the locations of celebrity homes
- The self obsessed
- The follower

This is a typical aspect of most teen films as they usually consist of a group or gang with different members playing individual roles. For example, most teen movies have a group with a main leader in it which gives all the orders.

Music:
- Urban
- Hip Hop
- Dance
- Trance

Characters:
- Rebellious Teenagers
 - Stupid Adults who do not know how to discipline their own children
- Authorities who ruin the gangs fun

Costumes:
- Urban
- Designer Labels
- Fashionable

The film differs from other teen films because there is not as much involvement of romance as most teen movies.
The protagonist (The Boy) wants to impress the leader of the group and is therefore influenced into doing things which he knows is wrong but still does it. He does everything to keep the leader pleased by providing her with the addresses to the celebrity homes and locations to where they could steal from. His kindness is taken advantage of by the leader and she acts really nicely towards him as she knows he will do as she says. This aspect is common in other teen movies as innocent characters want to be popular and therefore are taken advantage of popular people in order to be noticed with a particular reputation.

Filming the remake of The Breakfast Club

Filming the Remake of The Breakfast Club

How we found the filming:
The filming required several props and locations which we found the most difficult part of filming.

The main prop which we struggled to find was the four different cars that were used in the remake as we are too young to be able to drive and even own one. However, we just showed our characters, (Nadia, Thahmina and Jakir) as if we were inside the cars and acted out the scenes in the opening in a classroom.

When it came to showing a close up of the first car, we used a toy car to show the bonnet of the girls fathers car, we used a dissolve transition to smoothly connect it to the scene inside the vehicle. To find the locations was easy as we are in a college which is an advantage that works in our favour as the breakfast club is based inside and outside of the high school.

The things we found difficult about filming was not having enough people in our group; as their were only 3 of us. We took multiple roles of the characters.

Overall, the filming part of the task was very tricky but also very fun to do. We needed to bring in all the props for the remake to make it duplicate to the opening as possible.

Holiday task - analysis of teen film

SUPERBAD

the teen film 'superbad' is about two high school friends that go on a a quest to get alcohol for a graduation party,in hopes of losing their virginity.

Stereotypes of high school students:
  • Wild
  • Outrageous
  • Out Going
  • dangerous
  • Drug takers
  • Sexually active (romance)
  • Drinkers
Conventions
Themes:
  • Parties
  • Rebellion
  • Relationships
The way in which this film reflects about modern culture teenagers is a negative/positive view in my opinion. As wild the teen in this film is portrayed it evidently shows the two boys can be quite irisponsible and dangerous as they know what they are doing is wrong but they carry on to fit in with the c rownd and become popular.

Setting/Locations:
  • High school
  • Bedroom
  • House
  • Cars
Characters:
  • Teenagers
  • Stupid Adults
  • Drug users
  • Police
Costumes:
  • Fashionable
  • Trendy
  • Urban

Our final remake of the breakfast club

Stereotypes

Stereotype's in 'Not another Teen Movie'

what is a stereotype?
  • a stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.

The pretty ugly girls are usually unknown and do not fit in with the crowd, they are an outcast within the school life. most usually blossom into a popular person who everyone looks unto and likes.

Jocks are usually the cool popular kids within the school or college.they tend to bully the unpopular kids and sometimes end up being the ones being bullied later on changing after becoming unpopular and hated.

Bitchy Girls are usually the popular girls who are known throughout the college or high school and have a group of friends that dress in the latest fashion and are from rich backgrounds.they are the ones that bully the ugly pretty girls and make their lives a misery.

Holiday Task - Analysis of a Teen Film

Mean Girls

The movie 'Mean Girls'  is a perfect example of a teen movie as it looks at the influences it has on individuals when they involve themselves in certain cliques during the stage of being an adolescent.

Mean Girls, starring Lindsay Lohan shows the journey of how her character, Cady Heron, started new in North Shore High, and slowly became a member of the popular girls also known as 'the plastics'. Soon enough, Cady does not realise that she is crossing  the line with Regina, 'The Queen Bee', leader of their clique, when she falls for her ex-boyfriend, Aaron Samuels. Things then begin to escalate when Regina tries her best to stop them going out by pretending she still loves him.

Mean Girls Trailer

Stereotypes of High School Girls:

  •  Fashionable
  • Pretty
  • Gossipers
  • Jealousy/Envy
  • Cunning
  • Relationships (ex - boyfriends and boyfriends)
  • Very conscious about the way they look.
Themes:
  • Relationships
  • Fashion
  • Popularity
  • Secrets
The way in which Mean Girls reflects modern culture teenagers would be similar because the film shows the different groups in the high school. In most cases, modern culture teenagers do still split themselves into different 'cliques' and some do go through the stereotypical phases of caring about their physical appearance. Although it is a negative approach on teenage girls as they should not have these personalities and should not worry about others or themselves, I believe that there are some teenage girls that this movie would relate to as most do go through that certain phase in life where they have to be at their best in every way.

Setting/Location:

  • High School
  • Girl's Bedroom
  • Parties
  • Classrooms
  • Cafeteria
Characters:
  • Cady (Lindsay Lohan)
  • The Plastics - Regina George(The Queen Bee) - Karen Smith ( The Ditsy Blonde)                             - Gretchen Wieners (Rich girl)
  • Janice Ian and Damien (The Loyal Friends)
  • Aaron Sameuls (Regina's ex boyfriend)
  • Regina's Mum (Not a good example - No discipline)
Costumes:
  • Fashionable - The Plastics all wear the same colour to show they are in their own clique
  • The Loyal friends dress however they want. Janice dresses Gothic and Damien dresses normally but they do not particularly care about their looks.

Comparison of Original & Remake

Our aim was to remake the opening scene of the breakfast club as similar as possible however we had difficulties doing so due to the fact that we didn't have the same equipment such as cars as we are underage to drive. This resulted in us not being able to achieve the same shots.

Editing the remake of Breakfast Club

Editing the remake of The Breakfast Club

We are using Final Cut Pro to edit our remake of The Breakfast Club.

Below are some images of each member of our group editing:

THE BLOG:

We used the blog to keep track of our groups progress. On order to elevate and succeed we made a storyboard and a script on the blog that we later used to help us make our film remake.

FINAL CUT PRO:

We used final cut pro to edit our film. We added on the soundtrack, titles and the voice over, however we found this difficult as it was time consuming and quite confusing to get the hang of using at first.

(music quietens down)

Voice over when scene starts – Saturday, March 24th 1984. Shermer High School. 60062

Music continues…

Music quietens down when showing the empty classrooms and hallways.

Voice over – Dear Mr Burnette, We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong but we think you’re crazy to make us write an essay to you on who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you wanna see us. In simplest terms, and most convenient definitions, see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, a criminal. That’s the way we saw eachother at seven o clock this morning. We were brainwashed.

The first girl – I can’t believe u can’t get me out of this. It’s so absurd that I have to be here on a Saturday. It’s not like it was effective or anything.

Her dad – I’ll make it up to you , Honey missing class to go shopping doesn't make you effective. Have a good day. (Gives her a bag as she walks out)

Boys mum – This is the first time and the last time you do this.

Boy – last

Boys mum – Well get in there and use the time to your advantage

Boy – Mum we’re not suppose to study we’re just suppose to sit there and do nothing.

Boys mum – Well Mr you figure out a way to study.

Baby – Yeaahhhh

Boys mum – Well go!! (Boy gets out the car)

Boys dad – Hey I screwed around. Guys screw around there’s nothing wrong with that. Except you got caught.

Boy – yeah mum already reminded me alright.

Boys dad – You wanna miss a match? You wanna blow your ride? (Boy shakes his head) And how is school going to give a scholarship for discipline case? (Boy walks out the car and slams the door).

(Someone in glasses walks in front of the car and car has to emergency  break)

Holiday Task Analysis of a Teen Film

EASY A

The teen movie 'Easy A 'is about a high school student Emma Stone who relies on a school's little white lie rumour about losing her virginity, she uses this to mill to advance her social and financial standing, making her a popular student whether she is liked or not by her peers.

The way in which this film reflects about modern culture teenagers is a negative/positive view in my opinion. As wild the teen in this film is portrayed it evidently shows she can be quite responsible as she knows her doings is wrong but she feels the need to help other people who are social outcasts and for them all to fit into the popular group they will have to lose their 'virginity'.

Donnie Darko Blogging Task

DONNIE DARKO

Locations and Mese-en-scene

Locations:

  • School bus
  • School mall
  • Lockers
  • Bench outside school
  • Classroom

Mese-en-scene:

There are many mess-en-scene techniques used in the clip from Donnie Darko to create the world of the school such as at the beginning where we can see a yellow bus which gives us the stereotypical impression that it is a school bus in addition to that we can clearly see the text above the bus which states "school bus" We also see people getting off the bus dressed in smart uniform and holding either a bad or books which creates the impression that they are students.
A classroom is the main background detail which tells the audience the clip is located in a school. Throughout the clip we can see a few people older looking than most people in the clip which tells the audience that they are teachers.

EDITING AND CAMERA
  • Right at the very beginning of the film sequence the camera starts upside down then rotates 360degrees clockwise and then starts to at mid pace zoom out. In addition, this is eye catching for the audience, the rotation of the camera could suggest the representation of the world turning around when they begin to attend school in teen dramas. This is affective because usually when a person starts intuition their lives change vastly in a short period of time. The camera then pans across the screen to follow the main character into school itself. This effect could be seen as isolating the main character identifying who will be the main focus of the duration of the film.
  • When the friends of the main character and the main character enter the school, the camera technique used is panning. The camera follows them in a swing motion. The camera sort of flips and does a 360degree rotation to show a new character being introduced.
  • The camera also pans through the hallways which eventually slows down and speeds up when introducing the different characters. This is shown to represent how teen characters are usually portrayed and stereotyped in different ways whether it being a good or bad aspect.
  • Towards the end of the clip, the scene begins to speed up when the teacher walks through the door, as he exits the sunlight shines through making it too bright to look at almost blinding, this effect is used to dissolve the transition into another scene, linking them together.

Characters

There are several characters introduced in the opening of Donnie Darko and each of them are presented in a different way to give the audience a vague idea of each one of their personalities.

It starts off showing 3 boys walking together showing that they could be the normal group in the school as they do not stand out in any kind of way. It is then followed on by introducing one boy pulling faces at another student in the school. Immediately we can see that the boy is a trouble maker at school as he is also noticed by the teachers in the school. One of the teachers in the clip scowls at the boy showing her annoyance towards him. Her facial expression indicates that she must be one of the important teachers in the school such as a deputy head as she is dressed in smart clothing and looks intimidating.
It is then followed on by showing a girl looking in the mirror. She then walks around the bad boy and looks at him which could suggest that she could be an ex girlfriend of his hoping for his attention.

The scene then follows on outside the school where it starts off by introducing a big girl reading a book. As she is alone, it indicates that she may be a quiet girl in school and also get bullied because of her size and therefore has no friends.
As the scene follows on, we can see that a new teacher has come to the school as we see the female deputy or head teacher introducing him to other teachers and we know this as he is shaking hands with them. Because of his friendly appearance, it suggests he will be a nice teacher in the school.
After the teacher has been introduced, we see the other two teachers walk on pulling faces showing their sneaky two faced personality. Finally, we are introduced to a bunch of girls dancing outside which suggests that they could be good friends and be part of some sort of dance club in the school. They also hug in the end showing their happiness to be reunited with eachother after the holidays.
